Arnett Fired After Just One Season

Bulldogs Move on After Disappointing Campaign

Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one year at the helm. The decision comes after a disappointing 5-7 season in which the Bulldogs failed to meet expectations.

Arnett was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach in January 2023, replacing Mike Leach who led the team for three seasons and passed away unexpectedly in December 2022.

In his lone season as head coach, Arnett's Bulldogs struggled to find consistency, losing four of their first five games and finishing with a 2-5 record in SEC play.

Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen thanked Arnett for his service in a statement released by the school.

"Zach is a quality coach and person," Cohen said. "We appreciate his efforts to lead our football program this past year. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

The Bulldogs will now begin the search for a new head coach, their third in as many years. Arnett's departure leaves a void at a program that has been through significant turnover in recent months.
